A blocked toilet: what to try before calling a plumber
Updated 20 October 2026
Most blockages clear with a plunger and a little patience. Here’s what’s safe to try, and when to stop.
First, stop it overflowing
Don’t flush again.
If the water is close to the rim, turn the small valve behind the toilet clockwise to stop the cistern refilling.
Try this
Put on gloves and protect the floor with old towels.
Use a plunger with a flange (the soft extra rim that fits the outlet). Push down gently first, then pump firmly 10 to 15 times, keeping it sealed.
If the water drains, flush once to check.
Still blocked? Try twice more, then stop.
What not to do
Don’t pour chemical drain cleaner into a toilet: it rarely reaches the blockage and can burn whoever opens it next.
Don’t push a wire coat hanger in: it scratches the bowl.
Don’t keep flushing to force it through.
Call a plumber if
Plunging didn’t work after three tries.
Other drains are slow or gurgling, or water comes up in the shower: the blockage is further down the pipe.

What it usually takes
A plumber clears most toilet blockages in under an hour. A blockage further down the pipe takes longer. On Dashfixe the time shows on the estimate before anyone travels.
