Safety

What to do first when something at home is dangerous, and how Dashfixe keeps you safe with an artisan.

In an emergency, call 112 first

112 is the emergency number in Portugal and across Europe. Call it before anything else if someone is hurt, there is fire or smoke, or you can’t make it safe.

Carbon monoxide: the danger you can’t smell

Carbon monoxide (CO) is invisible and has no smell. Fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, charcoal grills and generators can release it. Never run a generator or charcoal grill indoors, in a garage or in another enclosed space. Headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual weakness or confusion can be warning signs. Get everyone outside and call 112. Do not go back in until emergency professionals say it is safe. Use generators outdoors, at least 6 metres from the home and away from doors, windows and vents.

DGS safety guidance (in Portuguese)

If you smell gas

  1. Don’t use switches, lighters or anything with a flame.
  2. Open the windows. Turn off the gas at the meter if you can.
  3. Go outside, then call the emergency number or your gas company.

If you see sparks or smell burning

  1. If you can reach it safely, switch off the power at the main switch.
  2. Don’t touch anything that is sparking, hot or smells burnt.
  3. If you can’t make it safe, leave and call the emergency number.

If water is rising

  1. Turn off the water at the main valve if you can reach it.
  2. Stay out of water that could reach sockets, cables or appliances.
  3. If water reaches the electrics, switch off the power only from a dry spot. Otherwise leave and call the emergency number.
