A burst pipe or a big leak: the first 10 minutes

Updated 20 October 2026

Water spreads fast and finds the electrics. These steps limit the damage before a plumber arrives.

Do this now

  1. Turn off the water at the main valve. In most flats it’s next to the water meter, in a cupboard by the front door or on the landing. In a house, look where the pipe comes in or in the meter box at the boundary. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
  2. If water is near sockets, cables or appliances, switch off the power at the main switch, but only from a dry spot. If you can’t, leave and call 112.
  3. Turn off the water heater or boiler.
  4. Open the cold taps to empty the pipes.
  5. Catch and mop what you can, and move things out of the water.
  6. Take photos of the leak and the damage. Your insurer will ask for them, and a plumber can see the problem before they arrive.
  7. If you live in a flat, tell the neighbour below.

When to call a plumber

Right away if you can’t stop the water, if it’s coming from a pipe inside a wall or ceiling, or if it’s near the electrics. Once the main valve is closed, the plumber can come at a time that suits you.
